Proceedings of the UBC International Conference on Phonological Acqisition Author: Barbara Bernhardt ; John Gilbert ; David Ingram ; University of British Columbia. The UBC International Conference on Phonological Acquisition took place Juneat the University of British Columbia. This proceedings is a significant addition to the literature on phonological acquisition, containing important data and analyses.

The authors discuss a number of languages, focusing on the major period of phonological acquisition in production. The proceedings are arranged into the following four sections which reflect the four sessions at the conference.

SECTION I: Feature Acquisition Keren Rice, 'Aspects of variability in child language acquisition' Isao Ueda, Segmental acquisition and feature specification in Japanese' Mieke Beers, 'Acquisition of Dutch phonological contrasts within the framework of feature geometry theory' Judith A.

The nature of phonological representations and of their acquisition by language learners has been a subject of debate since at least the s.

Vihman and Croft () recently proposed the ‘Radical’ Templatic approach to phonology, which formally rejects segmental features as independent units of phonological representation, in spite of their central relevance within mainstream theories.
